PostHeaderIcon Ortiz calm before Mayweather storm

Despite the exchange of trash talk with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Victor Ortiz was a picture of calmness during the weigh-in ceremony for their Las Vegas fight on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) CEO, Richard Schaefer, said he was amazed with Ortiz’s display of self control during the Mexican-American’s face off with Mayweather.

"Victor just kept telling Floyd Mayweather, 'You know you're going down, you know you're going down'," Schaefer said in Ringtv.com.

"I mean, there was no raising of the voice. Just calm. With no hype. Just like, 'You know you're going down.'.. He just does not seem fazed by the magnitude of the event," added the boxing promoter.

Ortiz will be staking his WBC welterweight title against the undefeated Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Shortly after the weigh in, the confident Ortiz flexed his biceps while walking past Mayweather’s space on stage.

This irked the flamboyant Mayweather, who started jawing at Ortiz. He later grabbed Ortiz by the neck before they were separated.

"They were talking trash, and they started pushing, and that led to grabbing. And when I saw that, I felt that it was time to jump in and I found myself in the line of fire again," said Schaefer.

Ortiz came exactly at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds while Mayweather weighed 146.5 lbs.

Age, ring rust

Mayweather, the former pound-for-pound king, is confident that his age and his long layoff from the ring won’t affect his performance against the younger Ortiz.

"They say I'm still looking sharp. They say I'm still looking young," Mayweather said in ESPN.com. "Of course, I run at 3 or 4 in the morning.”

Mayweather said his defensive skills helped him avoid the usual wear and tear typically experienced by boxers his age.

Mayweather is 10 years older than the 24-year-old Ortiz.

“I don't think as far as me deteriorating or losing skills -- I think I'm still very, very sharp.

Still strong. The reason why is because I don't think I've been in any toe-to-toe wars. I think when a fighter's in toe-to-toe wars -- a lot of wars -- it's wear and tear on the body, and I haven't taken no abuse. So I thank God for blessing me with this great defense," he said.
