YANGON, July 30 (Xinhua) — The Myanmar authorities are taking action against Thursday’s violence committed by host fans in the second leg of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier match played between Myanmar and Oman at the Thuwunna stadium in Yangon Thursday, local media reported Saturday.

With evidence of snapshots, punishment will be made against the violence offenders, the 7-Day News said.

Quoting information official of the Myanmar Football Federation U Soe Moe, the report said the incident brings down the prestige of Myanmar and its people.

FIFA is also making investigation into Myanmar for the World Cup violence.

The game was abandoned Thursday after 300-400 home fans out of 30,000 threw shoes, water bottles and stones onto the pitch, breaking seats in the rostrum after the Oman team was leading 2-0 before finishing first half of their game.

Some of the Oman players were hit and sustained injury after the Oman team was given a penalty kick.

The violence forced players to run for safety as the federation chief U Zaw Zaw appealed for calm but was also also forced to leave the pitch.

FIFA confirmed Oman’s 2-0 victory in the second-leg result from round two of Asian qualifying for the 2014 World Cup as the official result to complete a 4-0 aggregate win.

Oman advances to the third-round group stage of Asian qualifying that is drawn Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
