Toroman sees bright side of Gilas

After heartbreaking losses to Lebanon in the semifinals and to Qatar in the bronze medal game, Smart-Gilas Pilipinas coach Rajko Toroman hailed his inexperienced squad for giving their rivals a surprisingly tough time in the just-concluded FIBA-Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut,Lebanon.To hear it from Toroman, the team played above their limitations despite being underhanded against teams who enjoyed “home court advantage.”
“Even if we finished fourth, I am satisfied,” said Toroman, who will return today fromLebanon with the rest of the team. “We lost two games against Lebanon and Qatar, but we were so close to winning two or three more games.”
The national team lost to Qatar, 80-75, in the battle for third Sunday night.
“Lebanon has the strongest team ever and they beat us by one point, with all the advantages they had (including homecourt). Everybody here is impressed with our team,” Toroman added.
Smart-Gilas missed the services of three bigmen -- 6-foot-10 American Marcus Douthit, seven-footer Greg Slaughter and 6-foot-7 Rabeh Al-Hussaini. Also missing was 6-foot-3 Fil-Am guard Chris Lutz.
Pressing the panic button, Smart-Gilas got Asi Taulava and the PBA veteran and many-time RP team member responded to the occasion, helping the team win three big games.
Smart-Gilas earned a quarterfinal slot in the Stankovic Cup after finishing the eliminations with a 2-2 card, which included a stunning 75-71 victory over defending champion and World Championship bound Jordan.
After seeing Asi perform, Toroman is more convinced that ever that the team needs PBA players for reinforcement.
“We need (at least) three pieces to be really competitive with everybody,” he said.
