Marvin Agustin and Nikki Gil as (1986) People Power lovers in Unitel Pictures’ The Red Shoes: More than just a love story
The Red Shoes, the latest offering of Tony Gloria’s United Pictures opening nationwide next Wednesday, March 10, is more than just a love story between a young man (played by Marvin Agustin) who stole a pair of shoes from the collection of Imelda Marcos at the height of the 1986 People Power Revolt and gave them to his girlfriend (played by Nikki Gil) and his mother. It’s also the story of a country’s long night’s journey into day.

The irony of it all is that the historic event happened when Marvin was barely seven years old and Nikki wasn’t even born yet. And yet, being true actors, they are able to flesh out the People Power characters with impressive credibility.

Let’s hear it from Marvin and Nikki in the following exclusive interview done separately:

How old were you during the (1986) People Power?

Marvin: I was born in Jan. 1979 so I was seven years old.

Nikki: I was born in 1987, a year after.

What do you remember about that time?

Marvin: Hmmmm, not that much. What I know I learned from my Lola who loved Cory Aquino because her full maiden name was also Corazon Aquino. She loved Tita Cory not only because they were namesakes but because she believed na magaling si Tita Cory who was the favorite topic at our home. Yes, my titas went to EDSA for the People Power.

Nikki: No memories at all. I was around six years old when we went to the Ayala Museum for a school assignment. That was about the time that I also started hearing from my parents’ stories about the People Power.

What do you know about Imelda Marcos’ shoes?

Marvin: I heard about the shoes when I was in high school when I learned about the Marcos dictatorship, kung anong klaseng First Lady si Imelda. Her shoes talagang described what she was — grasyosang babae, grand in many ways. I was amazed, how could one person own so many pairs of shoes? Wow, 3,000-plus! I saw them at a museum in Marikina City where we shot some scenes.

Nikki: I read about them in a book, about her 3,000-plus pairs of shoes. I exclaimed, “What!!??”

Why red shoes and not pink or blue or brown?

Marvin: You know, the original title was 2,999. But since the shoes that we’re using is red, they changed the title to The Red Shoes. Okey lang because it’s a love story and the color would describe love and power.

How did you internalize your role?

Marvin: ‘Yung character ko, hindi siya gan’un kabait na bata dahil nagnakaw siya out of poetic justice and out of revenge. Hindi ‘yon dapat ginagawa ng mga bata. But the boy has a good reason for doing that. He’s hurting because his father died during the construction of the Film Center and the brother of my girlfriend (Nikki) was killed in an anti-Marcos rally. So ang bata may galit sa puso at bilang ganti, nagnakaw siya ng isang pares ng sapatos. He planned to steal two pairs, one for his mother and the other for Nikki’s character. But in his nervousness, he got only one pair so he gave one shoe to his mother and the other to Nikki’s character. The story revolves around how the two shoes meet and the important people in my character’s life.

Nikki: Well, I just went back to my first encounter with Madame Imelda during the wake of Lucio San Pedro who was our distant relative, my lola’s uncle. I still remember the feeling; I was so starstruck that I was tongue-tied! In the movie, when the shoe was handed to me by Lucas, Marvin’s character, I used the same feeling I had when I saw Imelda, speechless! I was right next to her but I was frozen. Her presence was very intimidating because she had bodyguards around her.

Is it your first time to work together?

Marvin: I’ve worked with Nikki in a variety show, kaya lang hosting ‘yon.

Nikki: In a movie, yes. But I worked with him in MRS (Most Requested Song), an ABS-CBN show.

How is this different from your previous roles?

Marvin: When I read the script, hindi ko pinakawalan. I told myself, “Gagawin mo ito kahit walang bayad.” It was supposed to be for CineMalaya. (It took scriptwriter James Ladioray and director Raul Jorolan, who started directing TV commercials, two years to have their material filmed. — RFL)
Well, mahabang estorya bago namin ‘yon nai-sapelikula. Anyway, I called up Mr. (Tony) Gloria, “Sir, I finally found a good script.” You see, matagal na kaming naghahanap ng magandang material. Now, this.

Have you met Imelda? What were your impressions of her?

Marvin: Yes. I found her to be a nice and gracious lady. Maganda ang personality at very positive. She was with friends in my restaurant (Sumosam in Rockwell). I checked kung okey lang. “I love your restaurant,” she told me. Then she asked for a piece of napkin with my resto’s logo. She said, “Please sign your name so I will always remember you and your restaurant.” She has a way of leaving with you something you will remember for a long time.

Nikki: I first heard about her in school. We saw a documentary (by Ramona Diaz) about her. Until then, I knew her only as the owner of many, many shoes. After watching the documentary, I got to know her better.

Nikki: As I’ve said, yes. What struck me was the amount of make-up she was wearing. Wow, para siyang manikin! She really stood out. I used that as angle for an article I wrote for my Political Science class in Ateneo where I was taking up English Literature — you know, we Filipinos were like that, makapal ang make-up; outside, we look beautiful but inside there were so many issues.

How many shoes do you have?

Marvin: Inayyy, I haven’t counted. Medyo marami-rami rin because, like Imelda, mahilig din ako sa shoes.

Nikki: I am general-cleaning right now and I found 100 pairs that I haven’t used. I probably have over 200.

How would you feel if somebody stole one pair and gave it to his own first lady sa buhay?

Marvin: If it’s for a good reason, I wouldn’t mind.

Nikki: I wouldn’t even notice it. But if he stole my favorite pair, aba, mapapansin ko! My favorite is a pair of classic velvet black pumps. I love it because of its height, around five inches. Sana huwag ‘yon ang kunin niya.

(To Nikki) How would you feel if your boyfriend Billy Crawford would give you a pair of shoes that he had stolen?

Nikki (Laughing): He’s rich, so I think he could afford to buy one. But if he would do it, stealing a pair from Imelda’s collection, it would mean that he really loved me that much for him to take the risk.
(Note: Okay, Billy, prove it!)

Curtain call

Can you guess the identities of the seven (so far) TV hosts (both Kapuso and Kapamilya) who changed their minds about moving to TV5 even when the negotiations were almost a done deal, never mind if the talent fees dangled before them were four times higher than what they are getting? Here are their initials: A, C, B, F, P, A, K, D, A, T, R, L, R, G.

From reader Wynonna Maree Uy: Looney Tunes: Back in Action was produced not by Walt Disney Pictures as mentioned in last Sunday’s Conversations with Ricky Lo feature on Brendan Fraser but by Warner Bros. Pictures. The Looney Tunes characters were created by different cartoonists working for Warner Bros. during the ‘30s and ‘40s.
